Lash extensions have been around since 1902, and have since evolved into a diverse form of “art”. With so many options of lash styles, it can be a daunting experience for both first timers and returning lash clients.
In some cases, if your lash artist is not properly trained or staying up to date with the latest styles, products and techniques, the information passed on to you can sometimes be outdated or incorrect.
Not to worry, we are here to help & provide you with a good general overview of lash extensions before you get your set done.
What are lash extensions?
The lash extension process consists of a trained lash technician prepping your lashes with a lash bath, cleanser and primer, followed by applying synthetic lashes with a special lash adhesive to your natural lash. When applied correctly, a single extension is placed slightly away from the base of a single natural lash. Therefore your lash extensions should not cause any discomfort, provided the application is correct.
What happens when you get your lashes done?
The first ten minutes of your appointment consists of a consultation with your lash artist, discussing your desired outcome and then assessing your natural lashes to establish what style, length and curl will be best suited for you. Your lashes are then cleaned with a special lash shampoo, dried and then under eye pads or tape (we use under eye pads as it is more comfortable and soothing for our clients) are applied to under the eyes. Tape is sometimes applied over it, this is to ensure the bottom lashes are concealed and do not get glued.
A cleanser is then applied to remove any excess oils from the lashes, followed by a primer which assists the glue bond better to the lashes. Your lash artist will then map out your lash map using a marker on the eye pad and then tape the eyelid up slightly to get a better view of the lashes.
Now the fun part starts, application of the lashes under LED light! The lash tech uses two tweezers, one to isolate a single lash, while the other is used to pick up the extension, dip into the lash glue and then apply to the single isolated lash. Each extension is carefully applied at the correct angle to the single isolated lash.
It is important to note that lash extensions can take anywhere between 2-3 hours, sometimes a little longer. If you are getting your lashes done in under an hour, chances are you are not having extensions done. Many of these artists apply what is known as clusters (also known as ‘party lashes’ and are not healthy for your lashes) or they are not isolating your lashes properly during the process which could result in “stickies” (two or more natural lashes sticking together). The isolation of the natural lash is very important to prevent “stickies”. You shed 4-8 lashes per day and if your lashes are stuck together, they will fall out in a manner which is unnatural and could cause hair loss, gaps in the lash line or ingrown hairs.
Now for the important part – Once your lash artist is done, your lashes are brushed though (this should not hurt). Your lash artist will check through your lashes to ensure there are no “stickies” and that all natural lashes have extensions applied. A curing mist is then sprayed using a nanomister to help set the lashes. Your lash artist will then give you the spoolie to take home to ensure you brush through your lashes daily (and because the same spoolie cannot be used on anyone else for sanitary purposes).
Please note that pregnancy and hormone levels affect your lash retention.

What are the different types of lash extensions?
There are three main types, each which have further variations:
Classic – A single lash extension is applied per natural lash.
Volume – A fan, with more than one lash extension brought together at the base is applied per natural lash. Fans can be anywhere from 2 to 10 or more lashes per natural lash. Fans can be custom created for clients, with wider or narrower tops.
Hybrid – These are a mixture of both classic and volume lashes, still applied per natural lash.
What are the variations of lash maps?
Lash map refers to the structure or order in which the lashes are applied in lengths and curls. There are a number of different styles from cat eye to doll eye.
It is important for your lash artist to consider the shape of your eyes and face before choosing your lash map, curl and length. For example if you have slanted or hooded eyes, a cat eye will most likely cause your eyes to appear smaller.
What are the variations of extension types?

All lash extensions come in a variety of colours, curls, lengths and thicknesses. Thicknesses range anywhere from 0.03 – 2mm thick. The availability of options is based on what the salon has on offer. The thickness and lengths can be specified by the client however it is important for your lash artist to make this decision based on the strength and length of your natural lashes to ensure they can withstand the thickness and the length of the extensions selected. The rule of thumb regarding the longest length of the extension is that it should not exceed 3 mm more than the natural length of the client’s lashes.
Lash Aftercare:
This is the most important step in ensuring your lashes remain strong and healthy and to ensure they last as long as possible.
-Do not get your lashes wet for 24 hours after your appointment, avoid steam and saunas.
-Never wear oil based or waterproof mascara.
-Never use a cotton bud/pad on your lashes.
-Never use an eyelash curler.
-Avoid using any oil based skincare/makeup products around your eye area this will reduce your lash retention & people with oilier skin tend to require more frequent fills.
-Avoid pulling at your extensions or rubbing the eyes aggressively.
-Try sleeping on your back.
-The glue gives off fumes – which many are sensitive to. Sometimes your eye may be slightly red or sensitive, this subsides within a day or two. Should you require it, SPERSALLERG eye drops can be used to assist.
-You HAVE to wash and brush your lashes daily. Not washing your lashes results in a buildup of dead skin cells and natural skin oils, which decreases your lash retention significantly. Ask your therapist about our lash shampoo that you can purchase.
